Does Return of Food without Vomiting Break Wudu?

29 November, 2023
Q I usually have return of food without vomiting. It has nothing to do with the latter. It is almost like the food not gone far in my stomach. Usually it is liquid for example after drinking water. I wonder if it is breaking my wudu (ablution). What should I do when I am in ritual Prayer or doing wudu?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

In this fatwa:

Food return does not fall in the category of vomiting; no authentic school of jurisprudence considers it as invalidating one’s wudu.

Responding to your question, Sheikh Ahmad Kutty, a senior lecturer and Islamic scholar at the Islamic Institute of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, states:

You do not need to worry about food coming up to your throat; it is not the same as vomiting.

In case of vomiting, according to many scholars, it would be considered as breaking wudu unless it is a recurring problem over which a person has no control, in which case it will be excused.

Food return, however, does not fall in the above category; no authentic school of jurisprudence considers it as invalidating one’s wudu.

Therefore, you need not worry about it whether it happens during prayer or after prayer. If it happens after prayer, you may simply wash your mouth, if it causes doubt. That is all that is required.

Allah Almighty knows best.
