Can I Read Quran Out Loud in Nafl Prayers? (Video)

18 May, 2022
Q What is the ruling on reciting the Quran during prayer? Is it permissible to recite the Quran out loud in nafl (supererogatory) prayers?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

In this fatwa:

  1. The recitation during prayer out loud or silently is a Sunnah and not obligatory. So we recite out loud in Zhuhr and Asr and silently in Maghrib, Isha and Fajr.
  2. When it comes to nafl prayers, it is better to follow the pattern of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). He would recite out loud during the night and silently during the day. However, there are some specific exceptions.
