Being Pessimistic About a Certain Name: OK?

14 October, 2016
Q As-Salamu alaykum. My sister had a daughter, she named her Amira, but the baby dies. Now she is pregnant again and is supposed to have another daughter. She wants to name her Amira too, but I have doubts about this choice.... Please, advise.

Answer

If you are implying that your baby died because of her name Amira, then you are being superstitious. The baby died because of the will of Allah. Allah is the one who gives life and takes it way; we ought to accept His will without protest.

As for the name of Amirah you may do well to change it, not because of bad omen; rather, it means leader or commander; and hence it smacks pride. There is no shortage of good names to choose from: Maryam, Aminah, Khadijah, Rahmah, Haleemah, Aishah, Fathimah, etc. are some good names to consider.

Allah Almighty knows best.
