Is Spending on Parents an Obligation on Male Children Only?

19 June, 2020
Q Is serving, housing and spending on parents required only from male children or all children; males and females?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

In this fatwa:

The Shariah has obliged all children, males and females, to be dutiful and kind to the parents; especially when the latter are in real need for that. They are equally required to serve them as best as they could, just as they are obliged to spend on them.

The Shariah has obliged all children, males and females, to be dutiful and kind to the parents; especially when the latter are in real need for that.

Accordingly, they are equally required to serve them as best as they could, just as they are obliged to spend on them.

This is part of being kind and dutiful to the parents, as ordered by Almighty Allah Who said, “and that you be kind to parents..” (Al-Israa 17:23)

Ibn Ashur said: “this kindness can be embodied in words, acts, provision and comfort.”

We advise all persons, males and females, to be kind and dutiful to their parents in order to please Allah, the Almighty.

Almighty Allah knows best.
