In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
In this fatwa:
There is nothing wrong with using hand sanitizer containing glycerin and propylene plycol. They are not wholly impure substances. You don’t need to undergo any ritual of washing after using it.
In responding to your question, Sheikh Ahmad Kutty, a senior lecturer and an Islamic scholar at the Islamic Institute of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, states:
There is no need to worry about the use of the hand sanitizer containing glycerin and propylene plycol. They are not wholly impure substances.
The use of the sanitizers containing such ingredients is permissible for two reasons:
1- They are for external use only;
2- They are also excused because of unavoidable necessity. That is known as Umum al-Balwa, things whose use cannot be avoided either because they are so common, and there are no viable alternatives.
3- Furthermore, these ingredients have undergone chemical changes in such a way that their original properties or qualities have been altered.
In light of these, there is no need for you to worry about using the sanitizer. You don’t need to undergo any ritual of washing after using it.
We may do well to remember Allah’s words, “Allah intends ease for you, not hardship.” (Al-Baqarah 2:185) “and laid upon you no hardship in the religion.” (Al-Hajj 22:78)
Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “This religion is easy to follow; whoever makes it hard will only be defeating himself by such an attitude.” (Al-Bukhari)
