Wa `alaykum As-Salamu waRahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
In this fatwa:
You don’t need the permission of your husband to spend your money on your mother or help out any other members of your family who are in need.
Answering your question, Sheikh Ahmad Kutty, a Senior Lecturer and an Islamic Scholar at the Islamic Institute of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, states:
You don’t need the permission of your husband to spend your money on your mother or help out any other members of your family who are in need.
Your earnings are yours; you may, however, give a certain percentage of it towards the household expenses; the rest is yours to keep, and you may decide what do so with it.
Taking care of your mother is a greater priority for you than supporting your husband’s relatives; that is his responsibility.
Therefore, your husband is clearly wrong. Whatever money he has taken from you without your pleasure is unlawful, and he needs to return it to you unless you are willing to forgive him.
Allah Almighty knows best.
