Can I Name My Child “Rasul”?

06 January, 2018
Q As-Salamu alaykum. Alhamdullilah Allah has blessed me with a male child. My question is can I name the baby RASUL? I love the name.

Answer

Wa `alaykum As-Salamu waRahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

In this fatwa:

1- Muslims should have good names and give good names to their children.

2- Rasul is not an appropriate name to choose.

3- You may call him by the name of the prophet: Muhammad or Ahmad.

4- You can choose any of the beautiful names such as `Abd Allah and `Abd al-Rahman.

Answering your question, Sheikh Ahmat Kutty, a senior lecturer and an Islamic scholar at the Islamic Institute of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, states:

We would like to congratulate you on the coming of your new child. May Allah bless him and help you bring him up according to the teachings of the Qur’an and the Sunnah.

Islam emphasizes that Muslims should have good names and give good names to their children. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “You will be called on the Day of Resurrection by your names and the names of your fathers, so have good names.” (Abu Dawud)

Rasul is not an appropriate name to choose. Rasul means messenger.  You may call him by the name of the prophet: Muhammad or Ahmad. Alternatively, you can choose any of the beautiful names such as the following: `Abd Allah, `Abd al-Rahman, `Abd al-Ghani, etc. You may also choose from any other proper names, including those of other prophets.

Allah Almighty knows best.
