How Should We Deal With Conspiracies?

26 January, 2017
Q There is an article that states that there is a lot of evidence pointing towards Israelis being behind the September 11th attacks. They emphasize the reason to believe that is because Israelis have been known to do such things (ex: Lavon Affair), and in this case, some of them assumed the identities of Arabs and committed the attacks. It also says that the US gov. classified all the evidence against Israelis and even released Israeli spies, who were captured, posing as art students near the WTC during the attacks (even though they failed their polygraph tests). Should we, as Muslims, respond to clear our names in such cases, and point out who the real culprits were?

Answer

Asalamu Alaikum,

Thank you for your question.

Firstly, according to Islam, we should recognize that when the accusation is unproven we cannot blame people arbitrarily.

Secondly, we can and should identify that a crime is not necessarily sanctioned by Islam even if it was done by a Muslim.

We must be ready, as Muslims, to admit the clear undisputed facts of the case rather than deny that any Muslim could do such a thing. There are Muslims who do things far from the teachings of Islam.

It is sad but true and denying it is not only wrong, but is self-defeating in presenting Islam

As for the case you raise, the US government has not yet released its evidence for the authorship of the 9/11 attacks, nor is there any uncontroversial admission of authorship by, let us say, ‘Usama bin Laden.

Thus, under the principle “innocent until proven guilty”, basic to both Islamic and Western jurisprudence, we cannot blame the guilt of causing these attacks on anybody yet, including Israelis.

Nevertheless, we can be definite about one thing; whoever committed the atrocities were not obedient Muslims because Islam outlaws mass murder, inciting fear, suicide, and attacks against civilians, in any circumstance.

Before engaging in spinning conspiracy theories, Muslims should acknowledge that ‘Usama bin Laden, after all, publicly accepted responsibility for the attacks on US Embassies in east Africa and that, in that context, he is on record with an appeal to Muslims “to kill Americans wherever and whenever you find them”. As unIslamic and inhumane as this call is, we cannot deny that he made it.

Thus, there are grounds for the assumption that the WTC attacks were masterminded by him or, at a minimum, had his blessings.

It is of course true that Israel immediately profited from the fall-out of 9/11. But so did Russia (in Chechenya) and India (in Kashmir).

It is equally true that the Mossad has no moral qualms whatsoever when pursuing what it considers the best interests of Israel.

Still, it would be counter-productive for Muslims to deny the very existence of an al-Qa’ida network or the fact that some of the pilots, who flew on 9/11 had been Arab students, before speculating about Israeli involvement.

One should ask oneself whether Israel needed a catastrophe like 9/11 in order to tie America’s hands. The answer clearly is no.

Zionists have already been heavily influencing politics in the United States, as if Israel were a superpower and the United States its utterly dependent client.

Mr. Lamaan Ball, a consultant of Ask About Islam, adds:

The best thing we can do when faced with a conspiracy against us is to contribute to a proper and full investigation as to its real culprits.

The only way people can carry out conspiracies to commit grave crimes is through the failures of the relevant authorities to stop them.

If we think something is wrong with the conclusions of the authorities and who they suspect, then we should find the evidence and publicize it.

We must not allow this incompetence and we can prevent it by challenging the authorities to do their job by giving them and the public the evidence they need to consider.

Finally, while these things may happen, we should not ever despair because of them. Allah is the one in control. As Allah says in the Quran:

{And (the unbelievers) plotted and planned, and God too planned, and the best of planners is God.} (Quran 3:54

{They may hide (their crimes) from men, but they cannot hide (them) from God, seeing that He is in their midst when they plot by night, in words that He cannot approve: And God Doth compass round all that they do.} (Quran 4:108)

I hope this helps ease your mind about the situation at hand. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

Salam.
