Does God Think It’s Unjust to Have Daughters?

10 March, 2017
Q I read somewhere that there is a Quran verse (probably referring to the events surrounding the so called 'satanic verses') which says: 'Do you get the male children then, and He (God) the female, that would most certainly be an unequal distribution' or something like that - sorry if it's the wrong translation - I'm not a native speaker of English. So presumably in this verse God thinks it's unjust that he gets the 'female children' because they are lesser, or what am I to make of this? This contradicts, if you ask me, the verse where Allah says man and women are equal though not the same. Salam and greetings.

Answer

Salam,

Thank you for contacting About Islam with your question.

Allah is basically condemning disbelievers for favoring males over females.

This view still exists nowadays in some societies where males are favored over females and it is surely a matter that Allah dislikes. Allah says in the Quran:

{And when one of them is informed of [the birth of] a female, his face becomes dark, and he suppresses grief. He hides himself from the people because of the ill of which he has been informed. Should he keep it in humiliation or bury it in the ground? Unquestionably, evil is what they decide.} (An-Nahl, 16:58-59)

These verses properly explain why God the Almighty consider the unbelievers’ doing and practice as unequal distribution, for they are the ones who detest females, not God, the Almighty.

May He be praised and exalted, He does not discriminate between sexes. In His laws all human beings are on an equal footing, except on the basis of piety. Allah says:

{O mankind! Lo! We have created you male and female, and have made you nations and tribes that you may know one another. Lo! the noblest of you, in the sight of Allah, is the best in conduct. Lo! Allah is Knower, Aware.} (Al-Hujurat, 49:13)

Therefore, the disbelievers are the ones who discriminate.  So on what basis do they ascribe unto God what they detest while they relate themselves to males?

If had they had been just, it would have been equal distribution, though Allah the Almighty, Gloried be He, is more exalted and above all this.

So, this is a Quranic tactic of devouring their malpractice and injustice, even in their dealing with their creator, without showing any aspect of respect and proper consideration to His Might and eminence.

I hope this answers your question.
