Can I Use a Pan That Pork Was Cooked In?

24 May, 2022
Q As-salamu `alaykum. I have a question to ask: can a Muslim eat food cooked in a pan in which pork has been cooked before? But no pork is being served in the dish. So, is the food halal?

Answer

Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

In this fatwa:

It is permissible for a Muslim to eat in such a pan provided that it is washed and there are no traces of pork in it.

Answering your question, Dr. Wael Shehab, PhD in Islamic Studies from Al-Azhar University and currently the Imam of the Downtown Toronto Masjid in Canada, states;

It goes without saying that pork is not allowed for a Muslim to consume. Allah Almighty says:

{Forbidden to you (for food) are: dead meat, blood, the flesh of swine, and that on which has been invoked a name other than that of Allah.} (Al-Ma’idah 5:3)

However, it is permissible for a Muslim to eat food that is cooked in such a pan or pot provided that it is washed and there are no remains or traces of pork in it.

Almighty Allah knows best.
