Can Muslim Men Wear Non-Pure Silk Garments?

15 November, 2017
Q As-salamu `alaykum. Is it permissible for men to wear clothes that are made of pure silk and partially from other non-silk materials (e.g., 50% silk and 50% other fibers) since some scholars have stated that it is allowed for men to wear garments containing four fingers’ width of silk, because of the Hadith reported by `Umar ibn Al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) who said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has forbidden wearing silk except for an area whose width is of two fingers, three or four. (Muslim)

Answer

Wa`alaykum As-Salaamu Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh.

In The Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

In this fatwa:

It is worth stressing here that the example you have cited (50% silk and 50% other fibers) has no religious backing to prohibit it.

Replying to your question, Sheikh Muhammad Saleh Al-Munajid, a prominent Saudi Islamic lecturer and author, states:

If there is a tangible health reason for a person to wear silk, to relieve the suffering, then it is permissible in that case.

This is based on the Hadith narrated by Anas ibn Mailk (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace be upon him) allowed `Abd Ar-Rahman ibn `Awf and ibn Az-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) to wear silk because they suffered from a skin irritation. (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)

The scholars also allowed men to wear garments containing four fingers’ width of silk, because of the Hadith of `Umar ibn Al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) who said that the Prophet (peace be upon him) forbade wearing silk except for an area the width of two fingers, or three or four (meaning a small amount of silk that equals two, three, or four close fingers). (Muslim)

In the light of the above fatwa, it becomes crystal clear that only small amount of silken material in man’s clothing is permissible.

Needless to say that 50% is not a small amount. But, we have to keep in mind the fact that although there are some jurists who do not consider it haram (unlawful) to have a small amount of silk or a small amount of silken material in men’s clothing, it is still better to avoid pure silken neckties, gloves, etc., in obedience to the Prophet (peace be upon him) who told us that men should not wear gold and silk.

Allah Almighty knows best.
