Can Muslims Wear Clothing That Resembles a Cross?

27 September, 2026
Q My friend asked whether a geometric embroidery that unintentionally resembles both a pixelated sword and a Christian cross due to the horizontal bar is permissible to wear. She asked the designer, who told her it was just a design with no symbolism, and people would see it as a design since we live in a Muslim country. She also has a blanket with a border design containing a repetition of plus signs followed by pentagons. She is having thoughts about whether it could be a door leading to a Christian cross, but AI said both things are just designs with no symbolism.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

In this fatwa:

In Islam, clothing with geometric patterns that merely resemble a cross is not necessarily prohibited. The design’s meaning, intended use, and how people commonly recognize it are relevant considerations.

Responding to your question, Sheikh Ahmad Kutty, a senior lecturer and an Islamic scholar at the Islamic Institute of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, states:

Is It Permissible to Wear Clothing That Resembles a Cross?

Not every design that looks a little like a cross should be treated as a Christian cross.

If the design is simply a pattern or decoration, was not meant to be a religious symbol, and people would not normally recognize it as a Christian cross, there is nothing wrong with wearing or using it.

How Can You Tell Whether a Design Is a Christian Cross?

Look at what the design normally means, not at what it might possibly resemble.

A clear Christian cross used as a religious symbol should be avoided. But ordinary intersecting lines, plus signs, embroidery, and geometric patterns are not crosses simply because they have a similar shape.

If the designer has confirmed that the pattern has no Christian meaning and people normally see it simply as decoration, you may wear or use the item without concern.

There is also no need to keep looking closely at designs and wondering whether they might contain a cross. This can lead to waswasah—unnecessary doubts and worries.

Islam teaches us to follow what is clear, not to worry about unlikely possibilities.

So keep it simple: If it is clearly a religious cross, avoid it. If it is simply an ordinary design, treat it as an ordinary design and do not worry about it.
