Mosques across the UK observe a National Day of Prayer for Rain on Sunday, August 16, in response to prolonged dry weather and growing ecological concerns.
The initiative seeks to revive the Prophetic tradition of Salat al-Istisqa, a special communal prayer performed during periods of drought to seek relief, sustenance and divine mercy through rainfall, 5Pillars reported.
Several Islamic organisations are supporting the initiative, including Darul Ihsaan Barking, Darul Jannah Community Centre, Green Lane Masjid & Community Centre, Aytac Aid, the World Islamic Forum and the London Ifta Council.
The participating organisations said the prayer is intended not only as a means of seeking rain, but also as an opportunity for reflection, gratitude and renewed responsibility toward the environment.
A spokesperson said: “Rain is a vital mercy that sustains all living things – our crops, wildlife, and natural ecosystems.
“In Islam, turning to God in times of environmental distress is paired with our duty to protect the Earth. By coming together for Salat al-Istisqa, we acknowledge our reliance on God’s grace while reaffirming our shared responsibility to care for our climate and preserve precious water resources. We are representatives of the best of Allah’s creation, the one who is ‘a mercy to humanity.’
“Therefore, we must embody this mercy towards all our fellow Britons, including the thousands of farmers directly affected by the drought.
“These droughts will not only increase the cost of food this winter but will also have a significant impact on those in our society who are already struggling with the cost of living.”
Alongside the prayers, organisers are encouraging communities to take practical environmental measures, including conserving water, reducing waste and supporting local green initiatives.
Mosques across the UK have been encouraged to hold Salat al-Istisqa at a time suitable for their congregations and use the occasion to promote collective action on climate and conservation.
Worshippers are also encouraged to give charity, engage in personal reflection and pray for the wellbeing of the nation, its wildlife and agricultural lands.
Congregational prayers will take place across the UK on Sunday. Birmingham’s Green Lane Masjid & Community Centre has announced that Salat al-Istisqa will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the outdoor/main hall.
