In this fatwa:
According to recognized contemporary scholars, AboutIslam.net may qualify for Zakah under fi sabil Allah if its core work involves Islamic Da`wah, education, intellectual defense of Islam, and public religious benefit, subject to proper conditions and transparency.
Responding to your question, Sheikh Ahmad Kutty, a senior lecturer and an Islamic scholar at the Islamic Institute of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, states:
According to a recognized contemporary scholarly view, AboutIslam.net may qualify as a Zakah recipient under the category of fi sabil Allah, subject to specific conditions.
Scholars such as Shaykh Yusuf al-Qaradawi, Mustafā al-Zarqa, ʿAbd al-Karim Zaydan, Muhammad Abu Zahrah, Wahbah al-Zuhayli, and bodies such as the European Council for Fatwa and Research (ECFR) hold that fi sabil Allah is not restricted to armed Jihad, but includes organized Da`wah, intellectual defense of Islam, and conveying the message of Islam, particularly in contemporary and minority contexts.
Accordingly, if AboutIslam.net’s core work includes Islamic Da`wah and education, intellectual defense of Islam, support for new Muslims, and the production of authentic Islamic content for the public good, it may be deemed eligible under fi sabil Allah according to this view.
On the basis of the same scholarly position, AboutIslam.net may be described as “Zakah-eligible”, provided this designation is used with appropriate qualification and transparency. When applied responsibly, such wording enhances clarity, avoids misrepresentation, and aligns with accepted contemporary Fiqh practice.
