With Ramadan less than two weeks away, volunteers gathered at the Islamic Center of Detroit to prepare food packages for families in need, continuing a long-running humanitarian effort that supports communities across three U.S. states.
The annual food distribution initiative, organized by Islamic Relief USA, has been running for 15 years and aims to ensure families have access to essential food supplies throughout Ramadan, the Islamic holy month during which Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset, ClickOn Detroit reported.

This year, volunteers packed more than 1,600 food boxes, each containing enough staple items to feed a family of five for an entire month.
The boxes will be distributed to families across Metro Detroit, as well as neighboring communities in Indiana and Ohio.
“These are shelf staples — rice, two types of lentils, sugar, salt, and dates of course,” said Kesha Abdul-Mateen, US Program Manager for Islamic Relief USA.
The effort brought together volunteers of all ages, who worked side by side to assemble and organize the packages.
Organizers said the wide range of participants reflected the community-centered spirit of Ramadan, which emphasizes charity, reflection, and caring for others.
Awaiting Ramadan
For many involved, the packing event was more than a logistical operation — it was a reminder of the values at the heart of the holy month.
Ramadan is a time when Muslims focus on personal sacrifice and generosity, particularly toward those experiencing hardship.
Parents attending the event also highlighted its educational value for younger volunteers. For Fawziyyah Umrani, the food packing effort provided a meaningful opportunity to teach children the importance of service and empathy.
“It feels good so they can help others,” she said.
Islamic Relief USA said the goal of the program is not only to meet immediate needs but also to strengthen community bonds during a time when food insecurity can be especially challenging for families observing the fast.
As Ramadan approaches, organizers say initiatives like this play a vital role in ensuring that vulnerable households can observe the month with dignity and security, supported by the collective efforts of the wider community.
