Is It Halal to Work Directly With a Company Client?

24 July, 2025
Q Is it permissible in Islam to accept a direct job offer from a client I was originally assigned to by my current employer, if the client approached me on her own and I resign respectfully and properly?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

In this fatwa:

Islam permits an employee to work directly with a client after resigning, provided the transition is handled with honesty and respect. The key conditions are fulfilling all contractual obligations, giving appropriate notice, and not engaging in actions that harm the employer—such as stealing clients or breaching confidentiality. This is in line with Islamic teachings on trust and integrity in the workplace.

Responding to your question, Sheikh Ahmad Kutty, a senior lecturer and an Islamic scholar at the Islamic Institute of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, states:

You are allowed to accept this offer as long as you do not break any of the terms of your contract.

In Islam, it is allowed for an employee to leave their job for a better opportunity as long as they meet certain conditions.

It is a fundamental principle in Islam that contracts must be honored. This means fulfilling your current contract by giving proper notice and respecting any non-compete agreements.

It is a demonstration of your responsibility and commitment to your employer. Additionally, resigning in a manner that is honest and transparent is equally important.

Islam teaches us to keep our promises and be trustworthy. The Quran says, “O you who have believed, fulfill [all] contracts.” (Al-Ma’idah 5:1)

The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught that we are responsible for what is been entrusted to us and should avoid betraying that trust.

If an employee leaves their job without harming their current employer, such as by stealing clients or confidential information, then changing jobs is permitted.

Harm in this context refers to actions that directly impact the employer’s business or reputation. This view is supported by all four primary Sunni schools of thought (Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi`i, and Hanbali).

In summary, Islam provides a clear perspective on job changes. It permits employees to leave their jobs for better opportunities, provided they act with honesty, fulfill their obligations, and respect the rights of others. This reassures us that we can make career decisions with confidence, knowing that we are following the teachings of Islam.
