Should I Repeat Witr If I Missed a Wajib?

21 July, 2025
Q If I am uncertain whether I missed a Wajib (obligatory act) in my Witr prayer, should I repeat the prayer, considering the Hadith that there should not be two Witrs in one night?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

In this fatwa:

If you are uncertain whether you missed a Wajib in your Witr prayer, you are not required to repeat it. Islamic jurisprudence is based on the principle that certainty is not removed by doubt. Therefore, unless you are sure of the mistake, your prayer remains valid.

Responding to your question, Sheikh Ahmad Kutty, a senior lecturer and an Islamic scholar at the Islamic Institute of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, states:

If you are certain that you omitted a Wajib (obligatory act) in your Witr prayer, then you must repeat it. However, if you are merely in doubt and lack firm certainty, your Witr remains valid.

This is based on the well-established principle in Islamic jurisprudence that “certainty is not overruled by doubt” (Al-yaqin la yazulu bi-shakk).

These fatwas explain the Witr prayer further:

Almighty Allah knows best.
