Blackburn councillor Suleman Khonat has been honored with the Al Bīrūnī Award at the Muslim News Awards for his tireless hospice fundraising.
A long-time volunteer, he’s raised over £250,000 for East Lancs Hospice, inspired by their care for his late wife.
“The care and attention provided by the healthcare professionals are unmatched,” Cllr Khonat said, Lancashire Telegraph reported.
“They are attentive, caring, and supportive, creating a comforting environment for both patients and their families.”
Along with fundraising, Khonat is also actively involved in the Blackburn Burial Society, supporting bereaved families through all stages of funeral arrangements, including physically preparing graves.
His service to the community goes beyond local engagement. A former weaver and bus conductor, Suleman Khonat also served as National President of the National Federation of Retail Newsagent. He is a founding governor of Tauheedul Islamic Girls School.
Celebrating Excellence
Held at Marriott Hotel, the event celebrated the achievements within the British Muslim community, showcasing the work of professionals, public servants and volunteers from across the UK.
The awards were attended by Blackburn MP Adnan Hussain and Faith Communities and Resettlement Minister Lord Wajid Khan of Burnley.
“The Muslim News Awards for Excellence has grown into far more than a ceremony. It is a powerful statement, a resolute response, and a vital counter-narrative to the cynical and poisonous portrayals so often weaponized,” Ahmed J Versi, the founder of the Muslim News Awards for Excellence, said.
“This event uplifts and reminds us that true excellence goes beyond personal success; it is about lifting others.”
