Why Did Prophet Muhammad Marry His Adopted Son’s Ex-Wife? (Video)

04 May, 2024
Q When Prophet Muhammad’s adopted son Zayd ibn Harithah divorced his wife, Allah commanded the Prophet (peace be upon him) to marry his ex-wife. Why was the Prophet commanded to do so?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

In this fatwa:

When Prophet Muhammad adopted Zayd ibn Harithah, he changed Zayd’s name to ‘son of Muhammad’. But Allah the Almighty told the Prophet to marry Zayd’s ex-wife. This was to establish the fact that no one could take a child as their son and change their name.
