Can Muslims Use Dubious Amulets?

30 March, 2022
Q I found an amulet in my home. A scholar told me to get rid of it by putting it in an earthen pot filled with water and throw it away. He also gave me other amulets to burn twice a day, one to put beneath the Quran, one in a purse. Also told to recite surahs at the end and beginning nights of the lunar month. Is permissible for Muslims to use dubious amulets?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

In this fatwa:

You are advised to discontinue these dubious and questionable practices. There is no need for us to innovate procedures not prescribed by Allah and His messenger.

Responding to your question, Sheikh Ahmad Kutty, a senior lecturer and an Islamic scholar at the Islamic Institute of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, states:

We have sufficiency in what Allah and His Messenger have prescribed for us.

Let me advise you to seek treatments for your physical and mental challenges. The Prophet (peace be upon him) ordered us to see physicians and seek remedies:

There is no need to limit it to physical diseases; instead, it also extends to mental and emotional challenges, including worry and depression.

We also ought to practice turning to Allah for help through dhikr and duaas.

Therefore, I would urge you to keep away from those who peddle in occult practices that have no basis in Islam’s revealed sources.

Almighty Allah knows best.
