Why do we fast? Generally we deprive ourselves of something to achieve a greater goal. In Ramadan we receive great blessings for fasting. However, we are doing this for a greater purpose.
So what is the great goal we want to achieve when fasting? It is to be mindful of Allah’s presence and to be conscious of Him.
The more knowledge we have of Him, the more opportunity we have of getting closer to Him in the way that He wants us to get closer. Fasting is a way to do that.
Allah has made fasting obligatory for us. We must understand that Allah doesn’t obligate any harmful acts upon us. So if we do what Allah has commanded us to do then we must understand that it is best for us.
