EAST STROUDSBURG, Pennsylvania – Celebrating Islamic culture, the Muslim Student Association at East Stroudsburg University in Pennsylvania are planning a series of public events during Islamic Awareness Week to offer their colleagues a rare insight into Islam.
“We want to celebrate Islamic culture and remove any misconceptions or stereotypes surrounding our community,” Binetou Fall, a senior majoring in business management who is also president of MSA, told Pocono Record.
“This is a great opportunity for others to learn about another culture — it’s something that I hope impacts many people.”
Fall was speaking about the events planned during Islamic Awareness Week that will run from March 21 to 24.
Events for the week include learning about modern issues facing Muslims in America and a discussion on the Islam religion.
An event planned on Monday, March 21, will include a lecture on Muslims in America by Aalih Hussein.
The Muslim student will speak to the audience about the fundamentals of Islam and discuss modern issues facing Muslims in America today.
Another event will include introducing information about Ramadan and why Muslims fast the holy month.
The fast-a-thon event will invite non-Muslim students to fast from sunrise to sunset.
Then, during sundown, food will be provided from 8 to 10 pm in Common Grounds at the University Center.
The awareness week will also offer non-Muslim students a chance to try on the hijab. Free scarves will be provided for participants in the hijab day on March 23.
