Al-Sabirun (The Patient One)

Patience is a virtue for Muslims through which they can earn numerous rewards from Allah (SWT).

Patience literally, is the capacity to accept or tolerate delay, problems, or suffering
without becoming annoyed or anxious.

What does it mean to be patient and how can one act upon it?

Acting upon the virtue of patience means you believing truly in Allah (SWT) at the time of adversity and not complaining about the troubles you’re going through.

Rather, you hope that whatever is happening in your life, Allah (SWT) is there to look after you and will release you from such sufferings.

We have some beautiful references from the Quranic verses and hadith through which one can gauge on how to get the power of being patient and tolerant.

First and foremost, there is this powerful hadith in which Prophet Muhammad said:

“None is more patient than Allah (SWT). Some people even ascribe children to Him yet He gives them health and sustenance”- (Bukhari)

Think about it, Allah (SWT) who is the creator of all the heavens and the earth and every single creature yet the Divine Almighty is Himself an extremely patient one.

It is His patience that He still gives sustenance and takes care of every single being even though some of them deny His existence, His oneness, and His supremacy.

He doesn’t stop pouring down his mercy upon them all.

How about us? Where do we all stand as Muslims? How do we act when things get problematic in our lives?

Anyone in a moment of trouble should remember these Quranic verses to elevate his faith.

• “And we will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and the loss of wealth and lives and fruits but gives good typings to the patient

• Surely, Allah is with those who are Al-Sabirun (the patient ones)”- (8: 46)

• “Be patient [steadfast]: God does not let the rewards of those who do good go to waste” (11:115) “Seek help with patience and prayer. Though this is hard indeed for anyone but the humble” (2:45)

• “Only those who are steadfast in patience, only those who are blessed with great righteousness, will attain to such goodness” (Quran, 41:35)

• “And for the sake of your Lord, observe patience” (74: 7) The highest level of patience that needs to be shown is at the time when the calamity befalls a Muslim.

This level of patience holds a high status in the eyes of Allah (SWT) as over time a person becomes used to handling the sorrow.

The Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) said:

“The real patience is at the first stroke of the calamity”. (Bukhari)

God forbid when you hear news of someone’s sudden dismissal or an accident, you should keep a good hold on to your nerves not to react imprudently.

This is undoubtedly very difficult to practice but this is how the messengers and the companions of Prophet (S.A.W.) did during their lives.

Another very important aspect of life is, sometimes very close people in our family are troublemakers and ruin the healthy atmosphere around the house.

Allah (SWT) says in Quran

“And we have made some of you [people] as a trial for others – will you have patience? (25: 20)

Most of the time, people get suffered due to the harsh behaviors of their family members, house help, and colleagues at their workplaces.

Enduring their insufferable acts calmly, makes the way easier for Jannah by earning massive rewards via tolerance.

As Allah (SWT) loves Al-Sabirun (the patient one)- (39: 10) our Holy Prophet Muhammad S.A.W. said:

“The believer who mixes with people and bears their annoyance with patience will have a greater reward than the believer who does not mix with people and does not put up with their annoyance.” [In Majah]

Practicing patience becomes a strong weapon for a Muslim to deal with all sorts of problems.

Because the sense of security that one has that Allah (SWT) is the best of all planners” keeps him doing well in life.

Without regretting the loss, calamity, and mishappenings afflicted to him.

Ali Ibn Taalib R.A had this absolutely amazing quote:

“I will be patient even until my patience gets tired of my patience”.

May Allah (SWT) make us amongst those whom He loves and let us spend our lives in a way that will please Him the most.

“So be patient with gracious patience”. (Al-Ma’arij: 44)
