4 Levels of Remembrance of God- Which is Yours?

Know that the purpose of all acts of worship is the remembrance of God. There are four levels of remembrance:

1- Remembrance with the Tongue

The lowest is remembrance with the tongue, while the soul was distracted. This is like the person who prays because they are told prayer is good rather than because they wish to remember God; but much like smiling even when one is unhappy the act itself still has benefits.

2- Remembrance in the Soul is not Dominant

The second is remembrance in the soul, but where the remembrance is not firmly established.

3- Remembrance in the Soul is Dominant

The third is a soul, where remembrance is established and dominant.

4- God Overwhelms the Soul

The highest level is when God, the remembered, overwhelms the soul, rather than the person making an effort to remember God. At this level, God is so present in the soul that there is no need to remember. God is already there.

The goal of remembrance is that you love God more than all the world until the presence of God overwhelms you. This is the alchemy of happiness.
