Surah Al-Jumu’ah is an incredible surah with just 11 ayat.
It is part of the “musabbihat” series, in which Allah declares His perfection in the beginning and then says something about humanity.
Get to Know a Surah of the Quran is a series of videos brother Nouman Ali Khan presented in 2016 during the month of Ramadan.
The following is a summary of some of the most important points and reflections brother Nouman mentioned in this fourteenth episode.
Introduction
It is the 62nd surah of the Qur’an.
This surah is very very deep, and very very beautiful.
It got some really interesting unique qualities.
For instance, the first ayah of the surah mentions four names of Allah, as opposed to a typical standard two names of Allah.
So Allah says: Al-Malik, Al-Quddous, Al-Aziz, Al-Hakim.
{Whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth is exalting Allah, the Sovereign, the Pure, the Exalted in Might, the Wise.} (62:1)
It’s incredible that these four names of Allah then correspond perfectly to the next ayah in which Allah does not describe Himself, but describes what His messenger does and what he was sent to do.
Allah (SWT) says:
{It is He who has sent among the unlettered a Messenger from themselves reciting to them His verses and purifying them and teaching them the Book and wisdom – although they were before in clear error} (62:2)
So He sent among them a messenger who does four things for them:
– he narrates on to them His miraculous signs,
– he purifies them,
– he teaches them The Law,
– he teaches them wisdom.
Al-Malik
If you think about these four things, the first one of them is he introduces people to the great signs of Allah. The signs that remind people of Allah’s Kingdom.
And that’s the first name of Allah in the previous ayah, the King.
A king is known by his signs, by the symbols, by the castles, by the emblems worn by the soldiers, by the marks of his kingdom.
And all of this creation is a mark of Allah’s Kingdom.
This is Allah’s grand Kingdom that we witness before us.
The reading of Allah’s signs, and His grandeur and kingdom are corresponding to each other.
Al-Quddous
Next thing the Prophet does, the Qur’an says, he purifies them.
And you will recall the second name of Allah mentioned in the previous ayah was Al-Quddous, the Ultimately Pure. The Sanctified, The Holly and The Pure.
Only The Pure can purify.
And so the messenger purifies on behalf of the Ultimately Pure.
Al-Aziz
And then He says:
“he teaches them the Book”
Which actually in Arabic usage means the Law, he teaches them the Law.
And the Law can only come from the authority, and that is the third name of Allah in the previous ayah, Al-Aziz.
Al-Hakim
And then He says:
“wal-hikmah” i.e. wisdom.
And wisdom can only come from the source of wisdom.
Allah’s fourth name in the previous ayah was Al-Hakim.
So four names of Allah, and four activities of the Prophet, peace be upon him, perfectly super-imposed on top of each other in such remarkable beautiful language…
