Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem is considered one of the three sacred mosques for Muslims. It was the first Qiblah (prayer direction) before it changed to the holy mosque in Makkah:
We have certainly seen the turning of your face, [O Muhammad], toward the heaven, and We will surely turn you to a qiblah with which you will be pleased. So turn your face toward al-Masjid al-Haram. And wherever you [believers] are, turn your faces toward it [in prayer]. Indeed, those who have been given the Scripture well know that it is the truth from their Lord. And Allah is not unaware of what they do. (Quran 2:144)
But for Muslims, Al-Aqsa mosque remains the holy place they revere dearly and wish to pray in. It is the land of all Prophets. It is the place where Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) led the prayer, as an Imam to all previous Prophets before he ascended to meet God in the miraculous Night Journey.
Prophet Muhammad said:
No one should prepare a mount (travel) to visit any mosque except three: the Sacred Mosque, this mosque of mine, and Aqsa Mosque. (Al-Bukhari)
