Muslim Scholars Issue COVID-19 “Message to Humanity”

A galaxy of Muslim scholars from around the world have issued a powerful statement for people to reflect upon in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

The document entitled ‘A Message to Humanity’ calls on mankind to seriously ponder and reflect on the drastic changes that have occurred as a result of the global COVID-19 crisis.

“Coronavirus has made us realize that we are not self-sufficient. Our very existence and our ability to function is dependent on almost an infinite number of things; things that we cannot control and have no power over,” the statement read.

“All of these things are ultimately dependent on God. ​Since God created us and all of the things mentioned above, our very existence is solely dependent on Him. We are not self-sufficient, even if some of us are deluded into thinking that we are.”

The signatories include Shaykh Sharif Ibrahim Saleh Alhussaini (Mufti of Nigeria), Mufti Taqi Usmani (Pakistan), and Dr. Zakir Naik (India). Also, Dr .Ali Muhammad Muhammad al-Sallabi (Libya), Shaykh Shadi Alsuleiman (Australia), Dr. Yasir Qadhi and Imam Omar Suleiman (US).

Prominent scholars and educators from the UK include Shaykh Haitham al-Haddad, Shaykh Zahir Mahmood, and Shaykh Asrar Rashid. Also Abdurraheem Green, Dr Anas Altikriti and Hamza Tzortzis.

The message came in a number of languages, including English, Spanish, German, and other languages.

Charity

The statement acknowledges the outpour of generosity and charity that the pandemic has led to with increased charitable relief work.

“Many of us have shown great compassion and unity, irrespective of our differences. This is why we believe that, even in these unprecedented times, coronavirus can be the means for an intellectual and spiritual awakening. What follows are some key points for us to consider,” the statement read.
