Olive Tree Foundation Student Awards

Two York Muslim Students Honored for Work on Islamophobia and Justice

The Olive Tree Foundation has announced the recipients of its first-ever Olive Tree Foundation Student Awards at York University, delivered in partnership with the Islamophobia Research Hub.

The new awards highlight and support young scholars whose academic work and activism confront Islamophobia, anti-Palestinian racism, and broader struggles for social justice in Canada.

The 2025 award recipients are graduate students Sheema Khawar and Somar Abuaziza, both from York University’s Department of Politics. Their selection reflects not only academic excellence but also a deep commitment to advocacy and community empowerment, Iqra.ca reported.

“These students embody the spirit of the Olive Tree Foundation’s mission—to nurture knowledge, compassion, and civic responsibility within our communities,” said Naeem Siddiqi, Vice Chair of the Olive Tree Foundation.

“We are proud to support young scholars who are tackling some of the most urgent issues of our time.”

Khawar was recognised for her strong engagement in activism and advocacy on issues of Islamophobia and anti-Palestinian racism, as well as her academic promise as a researcher in this field.

Abuaziza was commended for her dedication to social justice and anti-Palestinian advocacy, along with his emerging leadership as a community organiser.

Addressing Islamophobia

The awards were funded by the Shamimuddin Siddiqi and Farida Siddiqi Family Fund at the Olive Tree Foundation, alongside contributions from the families of Naeem Siddiqi and Muhammed Haseeb Ali.

Their support aims to uplift students who are pushing forward critical conversations around justice, equity, and the lived experiences of marginalised communities.

The establishment of the Olive Tree Foundation Student Awards in 2025 marks a significant step in strengthening institutional support for research and activism addressing Islamophobia and racism in Canada.

The recognition of Khawar and Abuaziza underscores the Foundation’s commitment to empowering emerging leaders who bring intellectual depth, courage, and meaningful community engagement to these pressing issues.

Both recipients were honoured at the Inaugural Keynote and Reception hosted by the Islamophobia Research Hub on November 6, 2025, at York University.

The event celebrated not only the awardees but also the broader effort to create academic spaces that challenge discrimination and foster inclusive, justice-oriented scholarship.
