The caretaker of the International Muslim Organization mosque in the Rexdale area of Toronto was fatally stabbed in the parking lot of the mosque on Saturday night.

Toronto police officers found the man with a stab wound to his neck. He passed away at the scene, CP24 reported.

The International Muslim Organization have expressed deep sadness and shock over what happened.

“There are no words for what happened to the member of this congregation,” the organization said in a statement shared on Facebook by the National Council of Canadian Muslims.

“We further encourage our community not to speculate on what happened as the investigation is ongoing. Instead, we ask that you keep our brother and his family in your prayers.”

As the Toronto Police homicide unit investigates the case, there is no indication pointing to this homicide being a hate crime.

Muslims in Canada today number more than 750,000.

According to Canada’s 2011 National Household Survey, 3.2% of the total population adhere to Islam. This makes Islam the second-largest religion in the country after Christianity.
