Islamic Relief Teams Rush to Help Hurricane Fiona Victims

Teams of Islamic Relief USA have rushed to help thousands of Puerto Ricans affected after category 3 Hurricane Fiona slammed the island-nation, bringing with it flooding, mudslides, power outages, and devastation.

Hurricane Fiona ripped through Puerto Rico’s southwest coast on Sunday. Fiona struck on the anniversary of Hurricane Hugo —which hit Puerto Rico 33 years ago as a Category 3 storm.

With many residents left without a home, Islamic Relief USA’s Disaster Management Team has been working closely with members of the National VOAD (National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster) to build a humanitarian response to help families affected.

In 2007, there were over 5,000 Muslims residing in Puerto Rico, representing about 0.1% of the population. The early Muslim community largely consisted mainly of Palestinian and Jordanian immigrants who arrived between 1958 and 1962.
