Following Attack on Muslim Woman: Ajax Launches ‘Together In Peace’ Page to Combat Hate

In response to a recent Islamophobic attack on a Muslim woman at the Ajax Public Library, the Town of Ajax has launched a support webpage, “Together In Peace,” to show solidarity with the Muslim community.

The “Together In Peace” webpage provides resources to connect with Muslim community leaders and organizations, as well as a space for residents to share messages of love and solidarity.

The upcoming Community Healing Event will feature local leaders and officials speaking on the importance of unity and understanding.

“The Islamophobic attack on a Muslim woman at the Ajax Library is appalling and unacceptable. Everyone should feel welcome and safe in our community, and acts of hate will not be tolerated,” said Mayor Shaun Collier.

“I urge all residents to come together to support the Muslim community and offer a sense of healing during this time.”

Call for Action

According to Durham Regional Police, the attack occurred on March 22, 2025, when a Muslim woman was physically assaulted, her hijab forcefully removed, and an attempt was made to set it on fire. The incident has sparked widespread condemnation and calls for action against hate crimes.

Deputy Mayor and Regional Councillor Sterling Lee emphasized the need for continued dialogue: “Hate has no place in Ajax. We must stand in solidarity with our Muslim community and unequivocally condemn this violent act. It’s so important to continue having conversations that address acts of hate and ensure everyone feels safe and respected.”

The Ajax Anti-Racism Task Force (AARTF), which works to address systemic racism in the community, has also strongly denounced the attack.

“Racism and hate have no place in Ajax or anywhere else,” said Chantelle Vernon, Co-Chair of AARTF.

Co-Chair Malcolm Barrington echoed the sentiments, emphasizing zero tolerance for hate: “We should condemn all acts of racism and hate. As Martin Luther King Jr. said, ‘Hate begets hate; violence begets violence.’ The AARTF is committed to working toward eliminating all forms of hate in our community.”

Residents are encouraged to attend the Community Healing Event and visit ajax.ca/TogetherInPeace to learn more about available resources and ways to show support.
