The Need for Equity

We are one ummah. Our love for our brothers and sisters in Islam transcend race, ethnicity, gender, and social-economic status. Our commitment to serving our entire ummah must be modeled after our beloved Messenger (PBUH). The Prophet Muhammad didn’t simply treat people equally, but he was committed to equity. 

According to the English Dictionary, equity and equality are two strategies we can use in an effort to produce fairness. Equity is giving everyone what they need to be successful. Equality is treating everyone the same. Equality aims to promote fairness. Yet, it can only work if everyone starts from the same place and needs the same help.

Our Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) took special care of the marginalized in his community. Interestingly, he spent most of his time with individuals that were deemed unworthy of fair treatment during that time. Prophet Muhammad didn’t simply treat people equal, as he modeled an example of equity by offering his followers what they each needed to be successful. 

Ramadan

Digital Ramadan programs are underway. Access to information and community resources are now at the fingertips of many of our community members. Many of these programs are free and easily accessible to anyone with access to the internet.

Many could argue that digital Ramadan programs have increased access and availability of scholars to those that may have not been able to access them prior to the global shutdown of our institutions. We are moving the bar towards creating equitable communities and equal access to knowledge. 

We must applaud these efforts and encourage our community leaders to continue to produce digital programs accessible to all. However, we must continue to be keenly aware of our Muslim families that may be economically impacted by social injustices and COVID-19.

Access to the internet and digital programming may be limited in many households. Accordingly, their families are at risk of isolation during this blessed month.
