DALLAS – Dozens of University of Texas students and members of Dallas Muslim community came together on Tuesday, June 20, in a special vigil to remember Nabra Hassanen who was killed in Virginia on her way to mosque for late night Ramadan prayer.

“It’s not you fault for looking the way that you do or being the way that you are; It’s our fault collectively when we don’t make the society more respectable, loving and compassionate and do away with the root causes of violence whatever those root causes may be,” Omar Suleiman, founder and president of the Yaqeen Institute for Islamic Research, said during the vigil.

17-year-old Nabra Hassanen of Reston, Va., was murdered after leaving the All Dulles Area Muslim Society mosque in northern Virginia on Sunday.

The imam offer condolences and prayers to Nabra’s family and the Muslim community.

“May Allah have mercy on her and comfort her family. May He replace the trauma she felt in those moments with eternal happiness. May He bring tranquility to the hearts of all those who were with her that night,” he said.

“May He protect all of our sisters who are afraid and grant them courage and steadfastness. May He use us to bring peace to this chaotic world. Ameen.”

Meanwhile, the funeral prayer service for Nabra will be held at ADAMS Sterling, The Council on American Islamic Relations said in a statement.

“Out of respect for the deceased and her family, media will be offered a designated area on the sidewalk of Sugarland Road,” CAIR said.
