Over the past week, protesters have marched against police brutality after the death of George Floyd, a black man killed in Minneapolis on Memorial Day.
Peaceful protests exploded into unrest and outrage. Many shops, including grocery stores and pharmacies, were shuttered.
The tragedy added to the suffering of many families already affected by shutdown imposed due to the COVID-19.

In reaction to this multi-faceted tragedy, Al-Maa’uun organization in Minneapolis has launched a fundraising campaign to help deliver basic supplies to the needy.
“Many have asked how they can show financial support to good organizations responding to various aspects of this crisis. This is as pure of an effort to support as they come under the leadership of Imam Makram El-Amin through Masjid Al Nur,” Imam Omar Suleiman wrote on Facebook.
“This was an effort that actually supported George Floyd himself before his murder. Your donations will provide food, basic household supplies (including hand sanitizers and masks), and urgently needed medications to affected neighborhoods right now.”
Till Monday morning, the Launchgood campaign has collected around $93,000 out of the targeted $150,000.
Al-Maa’uun is a non-profit with deep roots in the Minneapolis community.
North Minneapolis’ Masjid An-Nur incubated the Al-Maa’uun program ten years ago.
Al-Maa’uun does critical work in addressing food insecurity, including a COVID response program. It works on providing 200,000 hot meals to over 200 unique households.
