MONTREAL โ As Muslims prepare to conclude their Ramadan fasting, 70-year-old Sabariah Hussein is not willing to give up her daily cooking to feed the needy and homeless, a tradition the Muslim woman has preserved for longtime.
The Montreal Muslim woman cooks for up to 300 people a day, helping to feed the homeless or anyone who needs a hot meal, CTV News reported on Wednesday, June 21.
โThis is the happiness of my life, to see the smiles on peopleโs faces,โ she told CTV News. โNever mind religion or race, Iโm there for them.โ
Sister Sabriaโs involvement in the Montreal community dates back 30 years, when she arrived in Canada after completing international cuisine courses in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia.
As a devout Muslim, she is heavily involved with the Muslim community, cooking thousands of meals for mosques spread throughout the city. She lends a hand to anyone in need, regardless of race, religion or sex, working closely with Riverโs Edge Community Church and Unity Church, both located in N.D.G. She also runs her own womenโs shelter from home, called Our Second Home.
Opening her doors and heart, Sister Sabariah also runs a womenโs shelter, becoming a legacy of love and faith.
โIn Islam, you have to be united, more than ever,โ she told Montreal Gazette earlier this week.
โThatโs why I want to do something good. Iโm not seeking popularity, but I want people to know that we Muslims are good people, too, that we do a lot, too.โ
