MAKKAH – Saudi Arabia has revealed plans to offer electronic identity bracelets for pilgrims during the annual hajj in September, to prevent any other disasters, after 2400 died in last year’s stampede.
The water resistant smart bracelets will include a compass, a guide and a voice assistant to non-Arabic speakers.
It will also include personal information about the pilgrim, including his passport details and address.
Along with the smart bracelets, the Saudi government will add an alarm in case of stampedes and will monitor hajj facilities with more than 9,000 cameras.
Every year, Makkah sees millions of Muslims from around the world pouring to perform hajj, one of the five pillars of Islam.
Hajj’s ceremonies are meant to symbolize the essential concepts of the Islamic faith, and to commemorate the trials of Prophet Abraham and his family.
Every able-bodied adult Muslim who can financially afford the trip must perform hajj at least once in a lifetime.
The Saudi new security measures followed last year stampede in which hundreds were killed and thousands injured in Mina during hajj.
