LONDON – A young Muslim woman has been attacked in a London street by two men who ripped off her hijab, in an attack described by Met Police as a “racially motivated assault”.
“The victim was not injured but was shocked and distressed by the incident,” a Met Police spokesman told The Express on Monday, October 10.
The victim, in her 20s, was walking along Tottenham High Road, in north London, when the attack took place around 7.30pm.
Walking with two other friends, she was crossing the road near the College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London, when she was approached by two men from behind.
One of the suspects grabbed her hijab, which is a religious covering of the head with the face visible, and yanked it off her.
The first man is described as a white man, in his late 20s or early 30s, with blonde or ginger shaved hair and stubble.
The second man is described as of Mediterranean appearance, also in his late 20s or early 30s, was clean shaven with spiky hair.
Police appealed for any witnesses or anyone with information to come forward, describing the incident as a “racially motivated assault”.
Occurring in daylight in a busy London street, the attack was decried as shocking.
“This was a shocking attack in broad daylight in the middle of a busy street,” Detective Constable Ben Cousin of Haringey Community Safety Unit said.
“Racially and religiously motivated crimes will not be tolerated I would appeal to anyone who witnessed this attack to contact police.”
