โ€˜Over 60,000 People Helpedโ€™

Muslim Charity Offers Lifeline to Peterborough Families

Volunteer-led charity iCare Peterborough, based at the Khadijah Mosque and Islamic Centre on Cromwell Road, has seen a sharp rise in demand for its services as families struggle with the cost-of-living crisis.

Founder Akeel Khalil revealed that in 2024 alone, the organisation provided 2,800 hot meals, 1,550 food parcels, and other essentials to over 20,000 people, The BBC reported.

โ€œItโ€™s frightening to see so many new faces reaching out for help,โ€ Khalil said. โ€œPeople are sadly choosing between heating or eating. It is a reality.โ€

Since its launch in 2021 with just two volunteers and โ€œsix biryani boxes in our hands looking for homeless people,โ€ iCare Peterborough has grown exponentially. It has supported about 60,000 individuals from diverse backgrounds with food parcels, cooked meals, clothing, baby essentials, and advice.

Khalil attributed the surge in demand to the worsening economic crisis, noting that the stigma around seeking help has diminished.

โ€œThe stigma does occur. It was worse in 2022. But as the cost-of-living crisis deepened, I feel thatโ€™s gone. People are saying we literally have no food or we need help with baby clothes, medicines, or hygiene items.โ€

Community Support

iCare Peterborough, a branch of the United Kingdom Islamic Mission (UKIM), runs a community kitchen with its own chefs, a food bank, and a weekly community hub in partnership with Peterborough City Council.

Volunteers also deliver essentials to those with limited mobility or transport issues.

โ€œWe are supporting people from all walks of life,โ€ Khalil said.

โ€œFrom babies to elderly people who are lonely and have not had any human contact. We provide a welcoming environment where dignity and privacy are protected.โ€

A Call for Help

Despite the achievements, Khalil emphasized the need for additional community support to meet the growing demand. โ€œEvery day, we are being contacted by new people, and itโ€™s frightening,โ€ he said.

Looking back at the charityโ€™s journey, Khalil expressed pride in the work of volunteers who make the initiative possible.

โ€œNone of this would have been possible without them. Theyโ€™re truly making a difference,โ€ he said.

As the charity continues to expand its efforts, Khalil urged people to get involved.

โ€œWeโ€™re always looking for more volunteers and support. If you can help, please reach out.โ€

With the cost-of-living crisis showing no signs of easing, the work of iCare Peterborough remains vital, offering not just essentials but hope and dignity to those most in need.
