CAIRO – Showing solidarity with Turkey against Istanbul terrorist bombing, German Television station Tele5 has changed its logo on Wednesday, January 13, to a German flag emblazoned with the Islamic star and crescent, making a mix between the Turkish and the German flags.
In order to express our sympathy to the victims of yesterday’s attack, you can see our program today with this logo,” Tele5 said on Twitter.
A blast at the city’s Sultanahmet district on Tuesday morning killed 10 people – mostly German tourists – and wounded 15 others.
A Syrian suicide bomber carried out the attack, Turkey’s president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, said earlier.
In the Mediterranean city of Antalya, three Russians were detained for allegedly providing logistical support to the militant group, the state-run Anadolu news agency reported.
Six other suspected militants were arrested in raids in the province of Izmir on the Aegean coast.
The alleged bomber, a 28-year-old Syrian named Nabil Fadli, was not on any militant watch list but had registered and given fingerprints at an immigration office a week before the blast, Ala said.
Quoting security sources, the Turkish newspaper Hurriyet Daily said that he had registered for asylum in Istanbul on Jan. 5 with four other men.
Getting criticism on their move, Tele5 said, “We find it rather unfortunate that the half-crescent became a symbol of fear. The Hilal is not a sign of terror.”
