Dr. Asif Qasim
A consultant cardiologist, Asif has also crossed the divide into technology and is the Founder and CEO of MedShr, a tool that allows medical professionals to discover, discuss and share clinical cases and images. MedShr has been featured across all mainstream media and has over 800,000 members worldwide.
Speaking on the night Asif shared, “One of the most frequent questions that I get asked is should I give up medicine if I want to do tech? That’s a very personal choice. I’ve managed to build a tech business as well as continue working in clinical cardiology, but it’s a difficult balancing act.”

Today, Dr. Hina J Shahid, a GP, chairs the Muslim Doctors Association. Speaking at the gala she said, “We will also be launching a digital publication that celebrates 101 inspiring Muslims in the NHS.”
Vice-Chair, Dr. Myra Malik, an Anaesthetist, added, “The reason why I got involved in the MDA is that we support the Muslim communities across the board, but also that we encourage one another in our healthcare careers. So whether you are a doctor, a nurse, a dentist, a healthcare professional, we’re here to support you in your career development.”
From the 101 Inspiring Muslims in the NHS
One of 101 is Dr. Shabina Asad Qayyam, a GP from Peterborough who is also a Councilor, she shared, “This year I was elected as the first BAME ethnic minority Labour party councilor. I part-take in quite a few charitable activities, including food banks. I am also a local community radio presenter on Salam Radio in Peterborough where I host a health show once a week.”
Speaking of her nomination Shabina added, “It’s a privilege and an honor and I’m extremely humbled to be here tonight.”
