101-year-old Dabirul Islam Choudhury has set a global walking challenge while fasting this Ramadan to raise funds to help families and victims affected by COVID-19 worldwide.
“These funds will provide shelter for the homeless, feed the destitute, provide education for young girls and boys, aid widows, and help war-torn communities affected by disasters. The donations will also help build mosques in the UK,” a statement on Choudhury’s Just Giving site reads, The National reported.
The ‘Walk with Dabirul’ challenge has seen people in more than 150 cities sign up to raise funds for COVID-19 victims.

People will walk in their local park or garden, with the aim of reaching 1.5 million steps by everybody taking part.
The challenge, which has so far raised more than £8,000, was originally due to take place on April 17. It was changed to April 24 to avoid a clash with the Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral.
Choudhury, who was made an OBE in Queen Elizabeth’s birthday honors list last year, raised £420,000 for COVID-19 relief last year.
Inspired by Captain Sir Tom Moore, he set himself a challenge of 100 laps around his communal garden whilst fasting in Ramadan. Choudhury walked 970 laps in his garden in Bow, East London, during Ramadan this year.
Choudhury donated £116,000 to the NHS and the rest of the money to 30 charities in 52 countries as part of the Ramadan Family Commitment (RFC) COVID-19 crisis initiative.
“I feel proud they have honored me for the efforts I have done. I thank everybody from the bottom of my heart,” he said after receiving the Queen honor.
