SASKATOON, Saskatchewan – The Muslim community in Saskatoon in Canada’s southern province of Saskatchewan, hosted an Islam awareness day, to bring people closer to their faith and culture.
“People do have a great understanding, and they’re very friendly,” Ilyas Sidyot, an imam with the Islamic Association of Saskatchewan (IAS), told Global News on Monday, October 30.
“If we create more understanding, then lots of confusion and misinformation will be dispelled automatically.”
Sidyot praised Saskatoon as generally a tolerant and understanding community, seeing such events important offer the people opportunity to learn more.
Hosting these events usually at association’s headquarter, this year’s event will be hosted next November 1 at Saskatoon police headquarters.
“We do communicate with police regularly and they’ve offered us a gymnasium, which is a larger space,” Sidyot said.
“It will have easier access for people who work in the area because it is a working day.”
The event will include food from over 20 different countries, henna tattoos, and an activity on how to wear a hijab.
It will also feature presentations and booths on Muslim tradition.
