What was the supplication of Prophet Sulaiman, peace be upon him, which is mentioned in the Qur’an?
Brother Nouman Ali Khan in this video reflects on this topic and how it can change the way you think about life.
In the Qur’an, Allah (SWT) tells us this supplication:
“He said, “My Lord, forgive me and grant me a kingdom such as will not belong to anyone after me. Indeed, You are the Bestower.” (Qur’an, 38:35)
What is striking about this du’aa is that righteous people normally make du’aa for the Hereafter, but in this case Prophet Sulaiman, peace be upon him, is making du’aa for what seems to be worldly matters as he is asking for a kingdom.
Why is he asking for dunya?
To answer this question, brother Nouman first notices that the beauty of this du’aa is his top priority (forgive me).
As far as the Hereafter is concerned, the only thing that lives after we leave this world is our good deeds which we leave behind (sadaqa jariyyah).
The Hadith tells us that the sadaqa jariyyah could be money, children who make du’aa for us, or beneficial knowledge.
Allah (SWT) gives different people different capabilities, talents and skills.
The thing about Prophet Sulaiman, peace be upon him, is that his special capability is governance.
He knows how to govern and take control.
He knows how to even control the rebellion of Jinn.
So he has an unusual capability of governance and controlling resources and putting things to service.
With the vast majority of people, power corrupts, but with Prophet Sulaiman, peace be upon him, he is in a unique position: he has kingdom and he knows how to use it for good.
What kind of sadaqa jariyyah can he leave behind?
Unmatched!
He sees an opportunity for his Hereafter to be reconciled by the talent that Allah (SWT) has given him…
And Allah (SWT) responded to his supplication, as mentioned in the following verses:
“So We subjected to him the wind blowing by his command, gently, wherever he directed, and [also] the devils [of jinn] – every builder and diver.
And others bound together in shackles.
[We said], “This is Our gift, so grant or withhold without account.” (Qur’an, 38:36-39)
