In 2009 Mandla Mandela became a member of parliament during the 2009 elections. In 2016 Mandla Mandela married for the 4th time. He married Raabia Clarke in an Islamic Center in Cape Town.
2 months prior to the wedding Mandla had reportedly converted to Islam. After his Nikah ceremony he said that he was honoured and delighted to announce his marriage to Raabia Clarke. He expressed his heartfelt gratitude to her parents and the Muslim community for welcoming him into their hearts.
Many people criticized Mandla Mandela’s conversion to Islam. They were concerned that he would not be able to carry out his responsibilities as the chief. Mr. Mandela was not phased by this criticism and remained positive throughout.
