One of the greatest misconceptions about Islam is that it is a misogynistic religion that encourages the oppression of women. It is commonly claimed that women are second class citizens and that they have no rights.
Some even claim that a husband is encouraged to beat his wife if he is unhappy with her behaviour. The verse used to make this claim is: “But those [wives] from whom you fear arrogance – [first] advise them; [then if they persist], forsake them in bed; and [finally], strike them. But if they obey you [once more], seek no means against them.” (Quran 4:34)
This short video explains briefly and clearly how this verse is not giving men permission to hurt their wives. We cannot isolate a single ayah without first considering the context and also looking at how the Prophet (pbuh) put it into action.
