Mahram

Wa `alaykum As-Salamu waRahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, the All-Merciful, the Mercy-Giving.

All praise is due to Allah. Peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

The Shari`ah rulings are based on normal and regular cases; exceptions have their own rulings. Normally, a mahram does not look at his female mahram with desire and does not describe her to others in a sensual way.

Therefore, a Muslim woman is not obligated to have full hijab in front of her male mahram and she may reveal of her body such parts that usually appear in her housework, such as her head, arms, shin, and neck.

It is also noteworthy that maharem (pl. of mahram) are not equal in this regard.

For example, a woman has to be more reserved with her husband’s adult son than with her father.

But in abnormal cases when a woman knows that her male mahram describes her to others or that his looks to her are unusual, she has to take on her full hijab and be more reserved with him.

Almighty Allah knows best.
