Q:
As a Muslim, Is it permissible to sell and open a gallery for still life and landscape paintings
A:
In the Name of Allah, the All-Merciful, the Mercy-Giving.
All praise is due to Allah. Peace and blessings be upon His Messenger Muhammad.
It is permissible to open such a gallery as long as the paintings and still-life works do not involve images of animate creatures. Al-Bukhari reported that a man came to Ibn `Abbas and said to him, “… I earn my living from my handcraft and I make these images.” Ibn `Abbas replied, “I shall tell you but what I have heard from the Messenger of Allah. I heard him say, ‘He who makes an image will be punished by Allah until he breathes life into it and he will never ever be able to do that.’ The man heaved a heavy sigh and his face turned pale. Then Ibn `Abbas said, “If you insist on making images, then make images of trees and of anything inanimate.” [Al-Bukhari]
Allah knows best.
