On 23 November, 2017, The Prince of Wales honored Sazeda Patel with an MBE for her work to help children, young people & families living and working in Blackburn.
She received recognition for helping break down cultural barriers after forming a scout group and summer school camps in the town.
Mrs. Patel, 36, is a mother of three children and works as a beaver section leader at Abu Hanifah Foundation Scouts Group. The foundation provides an opportunity for Muslim children to become involved in a range of activities, events, and adventures.
Mrs Patel said she was completely shocked when she found out she had been given the honor.
“At first I was worried it could have been a letter of redundancy or something horrible but I was so happy when I read it,” she said.
“I was sworn to secrecy to not tell anyone so it was so hard not to tell my friends.
“I’m so happy with the work I have completed,” she added “After expecting a child, my mindset changed and I wanted to make sure that things would improve for my children for when they grow up.”
