Answer
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
Dear questioner, thanks for your question, and we beseech Allah to guide all Muslim daughters and mothers to the best way through which they can help one another apply the teachings of Islam.
In Islam, a Muslim can’t obey a person whether he is a mother or whatever, at the expense of disobeying Allah. Here, you are not allowed to obey your mother in taking off the Hijab, but you are also religiously required to remain kind and dutiful to her as Paradise lies under her feet. It is a hard balance to achieve, but with patience and perseverance you will finally reach a conclusion where you please Your Lord and your mother.
Responding to the question, Dr. Muzammil Siddiqi, former president of the Islamic Soceity of North America, states:
As a Muslimah, you should remind your mother politely that you are following the command of Allah by sticking to wearing the Hijab. You should tell her that you would like to obey her in all matters, but not in the matters that are against the rules of Allah.
Do not use your Hijab to rebel against your mother and to create more problems between you and her. You should rather be more loving, obedient and kind towards your mother, without taking off your Hijab in public. In sha’ Allah, this will help your mother to see that the Hijab has made you a better person.
Those who follow the rules of Allah should be humble. They should not show arrogance towards those who do not follow those rules, but they should humbly remind them.
Allah Almighty knows best.
