Is Studying at a Mixed University Allowed for Muslim Girls?

15 August, 2025
Q Is it sinful for a Muslim girl to study at a mixed-gender university, and will she face severe punishment in the Hereafter?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

In this fatwa:

Muslim girls may attend mixed universities as long as they follow Islamic guidelines on modesty, interaction, and respectful behavior. History shows that Muslim women participated in public life alongside men while maintaining decorum. Judgment of one’s ultimate fate rests only with Allah.

Responding to your question, Sheikh Ahmad Kutty, a senior lecturer and an Islamic scholar at the Islamic Institute of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, states:

Allah Alone Decides Who Enters Paradise or Hell

The determination of who enters heaven or hell is solely the prerogative of Allah. No human being has the right to assume this authority. The Prophet (peace be upon him) was explicitly reminded of this in the Quran:

{You [O Prophet] have no say in the matter. It is up to Allah to turn to them in mercy or punish them, for indeed they are wrongdoers.} (Aal `Imran 3:128)

Islamic Perspective on Mixed-Gender Education

Regarding boys and girls sharing a classroom, there is no inherent issue as long as they adhere to the ethical guidelines governing interactions between men and women in Islam.

Historically, men and women coexisted in public spaces, including markets, while maintaining proper Islamic etiquette. Women were also present on battlefields, sometimes even fighting alongside men.

Therefore, attending a mixed university is permissible within the framework of Islamic decorum.
